What 55/45, 60/40, 65/35 and 70/30 Centering Mean in Millimeters
Centering ratios in millimeters: what 55/45, 60/40, 65/35 and 70/30 centering look like on Pokémon, sports and Japanese borders, plus grade limits per grader.

A centering ratio like 55/45 is a percentage split of the combined border on one axis, not a distance. On an English Pokémon card with roughly 2.5 mm of yellow border on each side (about 5.0 mm combined), 55/45 means 2.75 mm against 2.25 mm, a half-millimeter difference. 60/40 on the same card is 3.0 mm against 2.0 mm (a 1.0 mm difference), 65/35 is 3.25 mm against 1.75 mm (1.5 mm), and 70/30 is 3.5 mm against 1.5 mm (2.0 mm).
On a sports card with roughly 2 mm white borders the same ratios shrink: 55/45 is 2.2 against 1.8 mm, 60/40 is 2.4 against 1.6 mm, 70/30 is 2.8 against 1.2 mm. On a thin Japanese border of about 1.5 mm per side, 60/40 is just 1.8 against 1.2 mm. Same ratio, same grade, very different visual impact.
Those border widths are typical, approximate figures used here for illustration; your card's actual borders will differ by set and by printing, which is exactly why you measure rather than assume. How centering ratios are calculated (the formula behind the numbers)
Take one axis at a time. For left/right:
left % = left border ÷ (left border + right border) × 100
The larger percentage is written first, so 45/55 and 55/45 are the same centering. Repeat for top/bottom. Graders evaluate both axes and the worse one governs; PSA's standards describe centering as "the percent of difference at the most off-center part of the card," and TAG's Pristine rule is that no "single measurement" may exceed 51/49.
Going the other way, from a ratio to millimeters:
wide border = ratio % × combined width; narrow border = (100 − ratio %) × combined width
So if a card's left and right borders add up to 5.0 mm and the card is 60/40, the wide side is 0.60 × 5.0 = 3.0 mm and the narrow side is 0.40 × 5.0 = 2.0 mm. The difference between the two borders is always (2 × ratio − 100) % of the combined width: for 60/40 that is 20% of 5.0 mm = 1.0 mm.
Two consequences matter for reading the tables:
- The ratio is scale-free. A 60/40 card with thick borders and a 60/40 card with thin borders get the same grade. The millimeter difference is what your eye sees; the ratio is what the grader scores.
- Combined width is what you need, not one border. If you only know the card is "about 2.5 mm per side," you are assuming roughly 5.0 mm combined. That is fine for estimating, but for a real measurement you need both opposite borders.

Read across the three tables at 60/40 and the lesson is obvious: a PSA 9-line card is a 1.0 mm difference on an English Pokémon border, 0.8 mm on a sports border and 0.6 mm on a Japanese border. Collectors often report that Japanese cards "look" better centered and that English yellow borders are unforgiving. Both are true, and neither changes the ratio. The ratio is what goes on the label.
What each ratio looks like in practice
These descriptions assume a normal, high-contrast border (yellow on a Pokémon card, white on a vintage sports card). On low-contrast designs, such as a dark border on dark art, or on borderless and full-art cards, the same offsets are much harder to see, which PSA acknowledges on its standards page when it says a card with a low-contrast design may receive an unqualified grade with borderline centering while a high-contrast card "may be prevented from reaching that unqualified grade because the market would view that card as off-center."
50/50 to 52/48. Indistinguishable from perfect without a measuring tool. A 0.2 mm difference on a 5 mm combined border is below what most people can judge by eye. This is Pristine territory at BGS, CGC, SGC and TAG (TAG's Pristine allows ~51/49 on the front).
55/45. A 0.5 mm difference on an English Pokémon border, a little less than the thickness of a standard plastic credit card (about 0.76 mm). If you hold the card at arm's length it looks centered; if you put it next to a 50/50 copy you can tell. This is the PSA 10 limit, the BGS 9.5 and 9 front limit, the CGC Gem Mint 10 limit, the SGC 10 Gem limit and the TAG Gem Mint limit.
58/42. Roughly 0.8 mm on a 5 mm border. Most collectors notice it once they are looking. This is the zone where forum threads get heated, because it is inside the old 60/40 PSA wording and outside the current 55/45 wording; the published standard says PSA 9, and anything better depends on the "approximately" and eye-appeal clauses.
60/40. The wide border is 1.5 times the narrow one. On a yellow Pokémon border that is a 1.0 mm difference and it is clearly visible. This is the PSA 9 line, the CGC 9 line (sports and non-sports), the SGC 9 line, the TAG 9 line and the BGS 8 front line.
65/35. The wide border is nearly twice the narrow one (1.9×). On a high-contrast border it is obvious at a glance and the card looks "shifted." PSA 8, BGS 7, CGC 8 (and 7.5), SGC 8/8.5, TAG 8.
70/30. The wide border is more than twice the narrow one (2.3×); on an English Pokémon border the narrow side is down to about 1.5 mm. Unmistakably off-center. PSA 7, BGS 6, CGC 7, SGC 7/7.5, TAG 7. Widely cited raw-card Near Mint guidelines (the TCGplayer guideline is the one most often quoted) stop around here.
75/25 and beyond. The wide border is three times the narrow one. At 80/20 the narrow border on a 5 mm card is 1.0 mm; at 90/10 it is 0.5 mm, a sliver. Beyond 90/10 the border disappears on one side and the card starts to read as a miscut rather than as off-center; PSA's MC (miscut) qualifier covers cards with "an atypical cut for the issue."
Which grade each ratio allows, grader by grader
This table maps each front ratio to the highest grade whose published front centering tolerance it satisfies. Front only; back tolerances are covered in does back centering matter. PSA figures are "approximately"; CGC's numbers below 10 are stated for sports and non-sports cards; all values are from the official standards linked in the sources, as of August 2026.

Three things to notice:
- 55/45 is the universal top-grade line. Every company's "10" (PSA 10, CGC Gem Mint 10, SGC 10 Gem, TAG 10 Gem Mint) and Beckett's 9.5 all sit at approximately 55/45 on the front. The Pristine tiers above that require 50/50 (or ~51/49 at TAG). Full company-by-company detail is in the centering tolerance table by grade.
- 60/40 is one grade down everywhere, and two at BGS. PSA 9, CGC 9, SGC 9, TAG 9, but only a BGS 8 centering subgrade, because Beckett uses 55/45 for both 9.5 and 9.
- PSA's 5% leeway applies from PSA 7 up. PSA's published text says "A 5% leeway is given to the front centering minimum standards for cards which grade PSA 7 or better," with the example that a card measuring 65/35 may still be deemed to meet the PSA 9 front standard "if the eye appeal of the card is good." That is why a 62/38 card is not automatically locked out of a 9; it is also why you should not count on it. See PSA centering standards for the full wording.
Measurement precision: why a quarter millimeter matters
Because the ratio is a percentage of a small combined width, tiny measurement errors move the ratio a lot. Suppose a sports card is truly 2.0 mm left and 2.0 mm right (50/50, 4.0 mm combined). If your reference line is off by 0.25 mm in a way that adds to one side and subtracts from the other (the common case when you line a ruler up slightly wrong or the photo is tilted), you read 2.25 mm and 1.75 mm: 2.25 ÷ 4.0 = 56.25%, so a perfect card reads as 56/44, outside the PSA 10 line. On a 3.0 mm combined Japanese border the same 0.25 mm error reads 1.75 ÷ 3.0 = 58.3%, roughly 58/42.
A ruler with 1 mm graduations cannot reliably resolve 0.25 mm. That is why collectors who want a number they can trust scan the card and count pixels, use a digital caliper, or use a photo tool that lets them place guide lines precisely. At 600 dpi, one millimeter is 600 ÷ 25.4 ≈ 23.6 pixels, so a 0.25 mm error is about 6 pixels, which is easy to see and correct on a zoomed scan; at 300 dpi it is about 3 pixels. Whatever tool you use, three rules keep the arithmetic honest: measure from the card edge to the outer printed border (not to the artwork) and use the same reference on both sides; measure each border at two points along the edge to catch tilt and diamond cuts; and photograph or scan straight down, out of the sleeve, because perspective compresses one side and hands you a false ratio.

Work these four before reading the answers. Report the worse axis as the card's centering.
- Pokémon card, front: left 2.4 mm, right 2.6 mm, top 2.2 mm, bottom 2.8 mm.
- Sports card, front: left 1.6 mm, right 2.4 mm, top 2.0 mm, bottom 2.0 mm.
- Japanese card, front: left 1.35 mm, right 1.65 mm, top 1.5 mm, bottom 1.5 mm.
- Any card, back: left 3.0 mm, right 1.0 mm, top 2.1 mm, bottom 1.9 mm.
Answers:
- Left/right: 2.6 ÷ 5.0 = 52% → 52/48. Top/bottom: 2.8 ÷ 5.0 = 56% → 56/44. Worse axis 56/44. On the published ladders that is just outside PSA's approximately 55/45 and inside 60/40: PSA 9 on paper, with the "approximately" clause the only path to a 10; BGS 8 centering; CGC 9; SGC 9; TAG 9.
- Left/right: 2.4 ÷ 4.0 = 60% → 60/40. Top/bottom: 50/50. Worse axis 60/40: PSA 9, BGS 8, CGC 9, SGC 9, TAG 9. Note that the top/bottom being perfect does not help; the worse axis governs.
- Left/right: 1.65 ÷ 3.0 = 55% → 55/45. Top/bottom 50/50. Worse axis 55/45: PSA 10 line, BGS 9.5 centering, CGC Gem Mint 10, SGC 10 Gem, TAG Gem Mint. The total visible difference is only 0.3 mm, which is why this card looks perfect in hand.
- Left/right: 3.0 ÷ 4.0 = 75% → 75/25. Top/bottom: 2.1 ÷ 4.0 = 52.5% → roughly 53/47. Worse axis 75/25 on the back: exactly at PSA's and CGC's Gem Mint 10 back limit, outside BGS 9's 70/30, outside TAG's Gem Mint back limits (70/30 sports, 65/35 TCG).
If your own numbers came out different, the most common slip is dividing by the wrong total (each axis has its own combined width) or writing the smaller percentage first.
Bottom line
- A centering ratio is a percentage of the combined border on one axis; convert with wide = ratio × combined width, narrow = (100 − ratio) × combined width.
- On an illustrative 5 mm combined English Pokémon border, 55/45 is a 0.5 mm difference, 60/40 is 1.0 mm, 65/35 is 1.5 mm and 70/30 is 2.0 mm; on 4 mm sports borders and 3 mm Japanese borders the same ratios are proportionally smaller.
- The same ratio looks worse on thick, high-contrast borders and better on thin or low-contrast ones, but graders score the ratio, not the millimeters.
- 55/45 is the front line for every company's top non-Pristine grade (PSA 10, BGS 9.5, CGC 10, SGC 10 Gem, TAG 10 Gem Mint); 60/40 is one grade lower everywhere and two lower at BGS; 65/35 and 70/30 map to PSA 8 and PSA 7.
- A 0.25 mm measurement error can turn a 50/50 card into a 56/44 reading on a 4 mm border, so scan, use a caliper or use a photo tool with guide lines, and always report the worse axis.

What does 70/30 centering look like?
70/30 means the wide border is more than twice the narrow one (70 divided by 30 is about 2.3). On a 5.0 mm combined border that is 3.5 mm against 1.5 mm, a 2.0 mm difference; on a 4.0 mm sports border it is 2.8 mm against 1.2 mm. It is the published front limit for PSA 7, BGS 6, CGC 7, SGC 7 and 7.5, and TAG 7, and it is roughly where widely cited raw Near Mint guidelines stop.
How do I convert millimeters to a centering ratio?
Measure the two opposite borders on one axis in the same units, add them together, then divide the wider one by the total and multiply by 100. Example: left 2.6 mm, right 2.4 mm, total 5.0 mm, 2.6 divided by 5.0 is 52 percent, so the card is 52/48 left to right. Do the same for top and bottom, and report the worse of the two axes.
Why does the same ratio look worse on an English Pokémon card than a Japanese one?
Because the ratio is a percentage of the combined border, and English cards have thicker borders. A 60/40 split on roughly 5 mm of combined yellow border is a 1.0 mm visible difference; the same 60/40 on roughly 3 mm of combined Japanese border is only 0.6 mm.
