PSA 9 vs PSA 10 Centering: The Exact Difference and Why Most Land at 9

PSA 10 allows about 55/45 front and 75/25 back; PSA 9 allows 60/40 and 90/10. The gap in millimeters, gem-rate data, and whether a 58/42 card is worth grading.

The centering difference between a PSA 9 and a PSA 10 is one published step on each side of the card. PSA's standards page says a Gem Mint 10 must be centered "within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the reverse." A Mint 9 needs centering "approximately 60/40 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse." In other words, the 10 line is 55/45 and the 9 line is 60/40 on the front; the back relaxes from 75/25 to 90/10.

In millimeters that step is smaller than it sounds. On a card with 5.0 mm of combined left-plus-right border, a typical English Pokémon-style yellow frame, 55/45 means the wide border is 2.75 mm and the narrow one 2.25 mm, a 0.5 mm gap. 60/40 means 3.0 mm vs 2.0 mm, a 1.0 mm gap. Half a millimeter of extra shift on one axis is the entire centering difference between the two grades.

And yes, most cards that are not 10s do land at 9, or lower: GemRate data reported by cllct put PSA's gem rate at 43% for the first half of 2025, so more than half of everything submitted comes back below Gem Mint. Centering is not the only reason, but it is the one reason you can measure exactly before you pay a fee, which is why this article spends most of its length on the numbers and ends with what to do with a card that measures 58/42.

Two clauses on PSA's page soften the hard numbers. The centering footnote reads: "At the grader's sole discretion, a small variance may be permitted on occasion based on the card's overall eye appeal." And in the qualifier section PSA states: "A 5% leeway is given to the front centering minimum standards for cards which grade PSA 7 or better. For example, a card that meets all of the other requirements for PSA 9 and measures 60/40 off-center on the front automatically meets the PSA front centering standards for PSA 9. If a card meets all of the other requirements for PSA 9 and measures 65/35 off-center on the front, it may be deemed to meet the PSA front centering standards for PSA 9 if the eye appeal of the card is good."

Notice that PSA's own leeway example is written for the 9, not the 10. The page does not give a parallel example saying a 60/40 card "may be deemed" a 10. What 55/45 vs 60/40 looks like in millimeters

Border widths vary by card type, so the same ratio is a different physical gap on different cards. The table converts the two front tolerances for three common total border widths (left plus right, or top plus bottom). A standard card is 2.5 x 3.5 in, 63.5 x 88.9 mm.

Three things follow from this table.

First, the 9-to-10 boundary is a fraction of a millimeter. On a thin-border card it is 0.3 mm. A steel ruler with 0.5 mm graduations cannot resolve that; a digital caliper or a scan with pixel counting can. See how to measure card centering at home for the methods and their error budgets.

Second, a thin-border card at 60/40 can look better than a thick-border card at 55/45, because the absolute difference is smaller and your eye responds to the visible gap, not the ratio. PSA's eye-appeal clause exists partly for this reason, and it cuts both ways: PSA's own standards page gives the example of a high-contrast 1957 Topps card that "technically measures for a particular grade – let's say 70/30" but "may be prevented from reaching that unqualified grade because the market would view that card as off-center."

Third, both axes count, and the worse one governs. PSA "determines centering by comparing the measurements of the borders from left to right and top to bottom," with the result "designated as the percent of difference at the most off-center part of the card." A 52/48 left-right with a 59/41 top-bottom is a 59/41 card. We unpack that in both axes off vs one axis off.

The back: 75/25 vs 90/10

The back step is larger and easier to pass, but it still knocks cards out of the 10. On a TCG back with about 5.0 mm of combined border:

  • 75/25 (PSA 10 back limit): 3.75 mm vs 1.25 mm, a 2.5 mm gap.
  • 90/10 (PSA 9 back limit): 4.5 mm vs 0.5 mm, a 4.0 mm gap.

A card with a 50/50 front and an 80/20 back (4.0 vs 1.0 mm) meets the 9 standard and misses the 10 standard on the back alone. Collectors frequently assume the back is irrelevant, or assume the 10 allows 90/10 on the back; neither is what the PSA page says. Why most cards come back 9: the gem-rate context

PSA does not publish a breakdown of why cards miss the 10, so what follows is the available public data plus process reasoning.

Fewer than half gem. cllct's mid-2025 report on GemRate data put PSA's gem rate at 43% on about 8.9 million cards in the first half of 2025, down from an industry-wide 45% in 2024. TCG cards gemmed at 50% (on 7.2 million), with 2020s cards at 59%; sports cards gemmed at 34% (on 5.1 million). For Pokémon specifically, PokeInvest's tracking of the PSA pop report (15.3 million graded Pokémon cards as of August 2026) shows an overall PSA 10 rate of 43.9%, a modern (2023 and later) rate of 60.3%, and a vintage (pre-2003) rate of 9.9%. Extreme cases exist: PokeInvest lists Typhlosion #17 from Neo Genesis at 0.11% (4 PSA 10s out of 3,653) and Lugia #9 at 0.15%.

Why the 9 is the common landing spot. A PSA 9 is the grade for a card with one minor issue; collectors summarize PSA's Mint 9 description as the "one flaw" grade, whether that flaw is a slight corner touch, a small print imperfection or centering between 55/45 and 60/40. A pack-fresh modern card that misses the 10 usually misses it by exactly one such thing, which is why collector wisdom says pack-fresh English Pokémon "usually" comes back 9 unless you pre-screened. Centering is the flaw most likely to be present on an otherwise untouched card because it is baked in at the factory cut; corners and edges are damage you can avoid, centering you can only select for.

Sheet position and print run matter. PSA's own article on the 1986-87 Fleer basketball set notes that "centering is the key" for serious collectors of that set, and quotes a collector explaining that the cards at the ends of the sheet "seem to always be off-center." Collectors report the same pattern in modern runs: a particular promo where every copy seems to be 58/42 is a whole print run that was cut a half millimeter off, and no amount of searching finds a 50/50 copy. When that happens, the 9 is the realistic ceiling for centering.

What else separates a 9 from a 10

Centering is one of four things PSA evaluates. The other three, corners, edges and surface, are where most of the rest of the 9s come from, and unlike centering they cannot be measured to a ratio at home.

The reason every pre-grading checklist puts centering first is simply that it is the only criterion where you can know the answer before submitting. If the front measures 62/38, you do not need to study the corners; the card is not a 10 on the published standard. Half grades: why there is no PSA 9.5

PSA's standards say cards "that exhibit high-end qualities within each particular grade, between PSA 2 and PSA 9, may achieve a half-point increase," and that in deciding, "there will be a clear focus on centering." That gives you 8.5 but not 9.5. The step above a Mint 9 is a Gem Mint 10, and nothing in between.

PSA has described the half-grade logic in centering terms before. A 2005 PSA statement reported by Sports Collectors Digest said that for an 8 to receive an 8.5, "a card has to meet the minimum centering requirements for the next highest grade." By that logic a card with 8 corners and 9-level centering (60/40 or better) is an 8.5 candidate, while a card with 9 corners and 10-level centering is still a 9, because there is no 9.5 to step up to. If you hold a 9-quality card with 52/48 centering, its "extra" centering has no label value at PSA; it would at BGS (9.5 vs 10 centering subgrade) or TAG (a higher TAG Score inside the Gem Mint band).

Decision: should you submit a 58/42 card?

Take a modern card, pack fresh, corners and surface clean to your eye, front centering 58/42 on its worse axis, back 65/35.

Step 1: place it on the ladder. 58/42 is inside 60/40 and outside 55/45. By the published standard the front supports a 9, not a 10. The back (65/35) is inside 75/25 and fine for a 10. So the centering ceiling is a 9, with a "small variance" possible at the grader's discretion.

Step 2: weigh what collectors report. Forum reports are mixed and should be treated as anecdotes: people describe cards pixel-measured at 54/46 coming back 9, a 59.5/40.5 card coming back 8, and cards between 55/45 and 60/40 getting the 10 "hit and miss" when everything else was perfect. The consistent advice from experienced submitters when a card measures 60/40 to 65/35 is to find a better copy.

Step 3: price the bet. As of August 2026, PSA's open service tiers start at Regular, $79.99 per card with a $1,500 maximum insured value and 70 to 80 business days, with its Value tiers temporarily paused (check PSA's pricing page, since this changes). If the realistic outcome is a 9, ask whether the 9 price clears the fee and your time; if the upside case is a 10, ask how much you are paying for an outcome the published standard says you should not expect. Step 4: consider a different label. Several graders draw their top line at the same 55/45 front as PSA: CGC Gem Mint 10 (approximately 55/45 front, 75/25 back), SGC 10 Gem (55/45 or better), BGS 9.5 Gem Mint (55/45 both ways on front, 60/40 back) and TAG Gem Mint 10 (approximately 55/45 front). A 58/42 card fails all of those too. ACE Grading's published 10 standard is "less than a 60/40 split," so 58/42 is inside it on centering. Step 5: re-measure before you decide anything. A 58/42 from a phone photo taken at a slight angle can be a 55/45 or a 61/39 in reality. Measure out of the sleeve, straight down or on a scanner, at two points per side. How to measure your card against the 9 and 10 lines

  1. Remove the card from any sleeve or holder; plastic adds reflections and hides edges.
  2. Photograph it straight down on a flat, contrasting surface, or scan it. Tilt is the biggest error source.
  3. Measure the left and right borders from the card edge to the outer printed border (not the artwork), at two points along each side. Average each side.
  4. Compute wide / (wide + narrow) x 100. Example: 2.9 mm and 2.1 mm total 5.0 mm; 2.9 / 5.0 = 58%, so 58/42.
  5. Repeat for top and bottom. Take the worse axis as your front number.
  6. Flip the card and repeat for the back; compare to 75/25 (10) and 90/10 (9).
  7. If the front is 55/45 or better and the back 75/25 or better, centering supports a 10. If the front is between 55/45 and 60/40, or the back between 75/25 and 90/10, plan for a 9. Beyond 60/40 on the front, you are looking at 8 or below on centering.

Bottom line

  • PSA 10 centering is approximately 55/45 front and 75/25 back; PSA 9 is approximately 60/40 front and 90/10 back. On a 5 mm combined border that is a 0.5 mm vs 1.0 mm gap on the front.
  • The worse axis governs, and the back can cost you the 10 by itself.
  • PSA's 5% leeway example is written for the 9; a 10 at 56/44 to 60/40 is possible under the eye-appeal footnote but is not the published standard, and collectors report it as hit and miss.
  • Fewer than half of PSA submissions gem (43% in H1 2025 per GemRate data reported by cllct; 43.9% overall and 9.9% for vintage Pokémon per PokeInvest), and centering is the only miss you can detect with a ruler before paying.
  • There is no PSA 9.5; 10-quality centering on a 9-quality card earns nothing extra at PSA.
  • A 58/42 card is a 9 on the published standard at PSA, CGC, SGC, BGS (9.5 line) and TAG alike; re-measure flat and out of the sleeve before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the centering difference between a PSA 9 and a PSA 10?

PSA's published standard for a Gem Mint 10 is front centering not exceeding approximately 55/45 and back centering not exceeding 75/25. A Mint 9 must be approximately 60/40 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back. Does PSA still allow 60/40 for a PSA 10?

Not in its published standard. PSA's grading standards page currently lists approximately 55/45 on the front for a Gem Mint 10 and 60/40 for a Mint 9. Older guides and forum posts still quote 60/40 for the 10 because that was the earlier published figure, and secondary sources say the change appeared in early 2025. Collectors report that cards near 60/40 sometimes still gem when everything else is flawless, but 55/45 is the number to plan around.

Why do most submitted cards come back PSA 9 instead of 10?

Is there a PSA 9.5?

A Mint 9 that shows 10-quality centering is still a 9; the next step up is Gem Mint 10. BGS and CGC do have 9.5 or Mint+ tiers, which is one reason crosswalks between companies are not one-to-one.

Does back centering affect whether I get a PSA 9 or 10?
